A brief history of Matt

Matt began his career in the mid 80’s, hailing from a small town called Eungella in tropical Queensland nestled in the mountains of Mackay’s hinterland.

The journey began in earnest from Brisbane in 1986 with a studio course at Pyramid Studios in Fortitude Valley.

Melbourne then beckoned in 1989 following the path of the live sound engineer.

Hooking up with Warehouse Sound he met Angelo Andrinakias of The Bachelors from Prague production team & started touring nationally & internationally as a live sound engineer.

During this period he also teamed up with Marc Wilkinson of Show Pro & began engineering on Australian legs of  tours for international acts the likes of Paco Peña, Marianne Faithfull & B.B. King.

Following on from his experience gained at Show Pro, he took on a full time position at Troy Balance, known in the industry as one of the finer touring, audio companies of that period. During this time, valuable experience was gained with larger format audio systems, particularly in the areas of arena & stadium sound system design, installation & operation.

Engineering opportunities were abound on the first Melbourne leg of the then new touring Big Day Out in 1993, after the success of the very first BDO in Sydney the previous year. One memorable historical moment of the Melbourne 1993 BDO was the infamous mud fight on the Skate Stage, thanks Cosmic Psychos & Freddie Negro. This period served well in honing skills in the art of live engineering, mixing diverse genre’s from Ice T & Bodycount to Courtney Pine.

Having now worked with many international acts, the drive & desire to follow opportunity was firming planted and in 1995 he moved to the UK to further his live sound engineering career path.

Touring Europe and America in 1995 & 1996 with Yothu Yindi served as a great learning experience and helped to springboard into the live audio company fray of the UK scene.

After stints working for SSE & Britannia Row over the summer of 1995 an arena tour with Blur was offered from Dick Hayes at Entec looking after Matt Butcher, long time Blur FOH engineer & his audio system needs.

1996 saw more European touring with Blur and stints again with SSE & Canegreen until later that year work started with Wigwam Acoustics on BoyZone. Wigwam would prove to be his home away from home, a place with an attitude & attention to detail that sat well with him & two great bosses in the form of Chris Hill & Mick Spratt. BoyZone continued for several years interspersed with many other of Steve Levitt’s Production North clients, including Peter Andre.

1998 saw Matt begin what would be the longest tour of his career, Michael Flatley’s, Lord of the Dance. In January 98 the tour began in the UK & promptly turned into one of the UK’s biggest ever arena tours. It still holds the record for the most number of nights of any tour at Wembly Arena, 21 consecutive shows. This led into great success for LOTD in Europe & by the summer of 99 it was time for a change. Thanks to Steve Levitt, he made it possible to shift across and ride the wave of pop success with girl band, All Saints  with their back to back theatre & arena tours followed by multiple festival dates throughout Europe.

Most of 2000 saw him enjoying working with another successful pop group, Steps. Later that year he found himself back touring the world with Lord of the Dance from October 2000 until April 2005. Over a 5 year period he toured 8 to 9 months of the year with LOTD. Finally in April 2005 he decided to move on from LOTD & enjoyed the opportunity to work with McFly over the 05 summer.

On the 29th September 2005 his life changed forever with a near fatal paragliding accident at Eungella. The accident left him an incomplete paraplegic, broken back.

This ended his UK based international live sound engineering career.

Based in Australia since the accident in 2005, he has endeavoured to stay in touch with his skills & side shifted into the studio environment. This process has meant learning a few new skills & adopting different work flows. With over 35 years of audio experience, it was a smooth transition into this closely linked field of audio making it possible to continue his love of creating & mixing sound.

August 2011 saw the opportunity to leave Brisbane & move to Burnside on the Sunshine Coast.

Over the last 10 years Matrix Productions has steadily grown enabling Matt to set up a boutique recording studio to continue recording, mixing & mastering.
